Chinese cabinetsTraditional Chinese house was not constructed with build-in closets. Thus, storage was accomplished in cabinets and chests of various sizes and configurations. In the kitchen you would find a kitchen cabinet with slatted doors and side panels for air circulation, to keep food, live poultry and kitchen ware. In Southern coastal provinces, the popular moon cabinet also known as wedding cabinet, was part of the bride's dowry. After marriage the bride would move in with her in-laws. In rural Northern China it is common to use a tanggui or quilt cabinet a large chest-style cupboard, used for storing clothing, bedding and grain. They could also double as a table. Another typical Northern cabinet is the compound wardrobe, comprised of upper and lower units. We also find the tapered Ming-style cabinet, sometimes constructed with a removable stile between the doors. The medicine cabinet with its many small drawers is an interesting piece of furniture. Restored to its original state, we can still find the rice paper labels on the drawers, describing which of the many different Chinese medicines and herbs can be found in the compartments. Although more and more difficult to find, we still try to find original pieces, so if you are looking for an old piece and we do not show it on this page, please feel free to mail us and we can try to find it for you in China. |
